When do I register: Registration for Blackstone residents begins on Monday, June 8 in person only. Registration for all library patrons begins on Monday, June 15. Email registrations will not be accepted. A registration sheet must be completed in person and filled out by the child’s parent or caregiver, including the parent’s contact information (email and cell number). When is the last day of registration: Saturday, June 27 (no exceptions!). How does it work? So glad you asked! Everyone receives a reading log, based on their age/reading level. The child must read five days each week. Reading progress is tracked on that log and brought to the library once a week to get stamped. Readers will then receive a weekly prize. In order to receive that prize, participants must visit the library in-person with their reading logs. When do we start our logs? Monday, June 22. If you’re reading five days a week, your first check-in can start on Friday, June 26. We’re going on vacation for a week and can’t get to the library, can we get two stamps on our logs next week: Yes - but only two stamps. You can’t go away for a month and ask for four stamps at once. What if we signed up for an event that we can’t attend? Please email or call. Most, if not all summer events have waiting lists. If you no-call, no-show twice, you will be removed from other events that you’re signed up for. This program says it’s for ages 7 and up, can I bring my 3-year old? Sorry, no. Often age restrictions are put in place by the presenters themselves for safety purposes.
I registered for Summer Reading but all the programs were full! Sorry, all the programs that require registration are on a first-come, first-serve basis and space is limited. However, there are plenty of drop-in events that don’t require registration. You have a lot going on this summer – do we have to come to everything? Nope! You can pick and choose which events you’d like to attend. You can even skip the programs and just fill out the reading logs and pick up prizes every week. How does the finale work? The finale is a celebration for everyone who completed the summer reading program. We have ice cream sandwiches, Hoodsie cups, prizes and a special performer, which this year is Science Heroes. Registration for the finale takes place later in the summer. Participants must have at least four stamps on their reading log in order to register. Friday, August 7 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Touch the Trucks (drop-in) Summer Reading Finale: Wednesday, August 12 @ 6 p.m.: Creepy Crawlies (indoors at library, followed by ice cream sandwiches or Hoodsie cups and prizes) You must have had your log stamped a minimum of four times to register for this event. Blackstone Public Library - Program Descriptions. Ready, Set, GROW! Magic Show (Kickoff)*: Using hilarious comedy, amazing magic tricks, music, sound effects and riveting storytelling, this show will help even the most reluctant readers cultivate fun associations with books and inspire kids to read all summer long. Ready, Set, GROW! is designed to showcase books along with positive, inspirational messages. Young readers will rush to harvest featured books like: The Bad Seed by Jory John and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by John Scieszka. For ages four and up. Caravan Puppets: Our Flying Friends*: Featuring wildly creative handcrafted puppets, beautiful staging and original music, this puppet show celebrates flight from the prehistoric to the avian. For ages 3 – 8. Teddy Bear Picnic: Bring your favorite teddy for snacks, stories and fun activities. For ages 3 – 8. Barn Babies*: Enjoy cuddling time with swaddled and diapered kittens, piglets, puppies, bunnies, chicks and baby goats. Strictly for ages four and up. Sensory Night: Can you pass the blind baby food taste test? Can you identify the scent of cinnamon from vanilla? Will you touch something while blindfolded? Test your senses of touch, taste and smell! For all ages. Books for Brunch: Enjoy a simple breakfast of Eggos, toast, fruit, yogurt and juice, followed by a breakfast-themed story time. For all ages. World of Owls*: Part presentation, part live-animal demo, this event features five live owls and a peregrine falcon. The audience will be taught lots of owl facts as each bird is shown individually. Strictly for ages six and up. Touch the Trucks: Get up close and personal with your favorite cars and trucks including several construction vehicles, fire trucks, ambulance, school bus, National Grid truck and more. For all ages.
Outdoor Lawn Games: Get busy with a variety of the library’s outdoor games including giant Connect 4, corn hole, bocce, egg on a spoon, beanbag toss, giant Left Center Right, ring toss, axe-throwing and much more. For all ages. Painting with Lisa: Follow step-by-step instructions and create a colorful masterpiece using acrylic paint on canvas. Strictly for ages seven and up. Craft Extravaganza: Craft to your heart’s delight using a variety of craft supplies including feathers, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, beads and much more! Creepy Crawlies* (Finale): It’s the show you’ve been waiting for! You’ll get up close and personal with live tarantulas, scorpions, giant cockroaches and snakes. We’ll learn about common misconceptions about these fascinating creatures, and why they’re so important to our ecosystem. Following the show, we’ll have ice cream sandwiches/Hoodsie cups and give out prizes!
